Housing

Most rooms in any given apartment are identically sized. If you’re the first one to arrive, pick the one that appeals most to you. If you’re the second person, take the empty one. Simple as that!

A word about cars:
Parking in fellow housing is limited.  There is one parking spot per unit at Dwight and Francisco street, and one spot period for Addison Street. Determine whether a street parking permit is something you want to invest in.  It's $30 annually.  To qualify for a Berkeley Residential Parking Permit, your car MUST be registered at your Berkeley address. Learn how to do this at dmv.ca.gov/online/coa/welcome.htm

Also: disregard warnings about street sweeping at your own peril. And Berkeley meter maids have a bit of a power trip.

About the buildings:
Every apartment is walking distance to the theatre (between 10 and 30 minutes) and a short bus ride to the administrative offices; please see “Local Transportation” for further information. Driving to the theatre is not recommended – parking in the area is costly and time-consuming – but there is plenty of free parking around Harrison. And, better yet, if you like riding a bike, this is the place to do it! There are Bicycle Boulevards and Bicycle Trails that run throughout Berkeley and the surrounding area. It is safe and easy to take any of these routes and plenty of bike parking at the theatre as well as the Harrison offices.

Fellow Housing is spread over three different residences:
Francisco Street: 2 people
Dwight Way: 4 people
Addison Street:9 people

Francisco Street is a mid-1970s open-plan apartment building with four stories. We rent one apartment here, at the back of the building. It’s sunny and warm, but shaded enough that it doesn’t often get overheated. The apartment has a living room, galley kitchen with dining area, and two bedrooms measuring about 8x10’, each with full-sized beds. The building is equipped with an elevator (VERY helpful on move-in day!) and a coin-operated laundry room on the ground floor. This apartment is also quite close to the theatre, in a residential area of town.

Dwight Way is an apartment complex with about twenty units around a locked courtyard. Berkeley Rep rents two two-bedroom apartments here. Apartments have hardwood floors and include a living room, eat-in kitchen, and two bedrooms measuring about 10x12’. There are two coin-operated laundry rooms off the courtyard. The perk about this place is that it’s five blocks from the theatre, in the heart of downtown Berkeley (close to BART and restaurants).

Addison Street: Also known as the Artech building or Gecko Manor. This apartment building is on the corner of Addison Street and Milvia.  Fellow units here have three bedrooms, and are located on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors. Berkeley Rep also maintains several units in the building for artist housing. There is a  coin-operated washer and dryer located on the first floor. The apartments have an open kitchen and living room (with a dishwasher!).  On the same block as the theater and Downtown Berkeley BART, a ten minute drive or short bus ride to Harrison Street.

Our beautiful theatre!

Moving In
Your mentor is responsible for meeting you upon your arrival, issuing your keys, and showing you your apartment.  There will be a $150 security deposit taken from your first stipend. Upon departure it will be refunded, so long as the apartment remains in the same condition.

What to expect in your apartment
All housing is furnished; each bedroom has a bed (most of them are queens, a few are full) and dresser; most rooms have a desk.  Your living room will be equipped with a television, while the kitchen will have flatware, dishes, glasses, and some pots and pans. If you have your own favorite kitchenware that you would prefer to bring with you, that’s fine too. You should plan to bring or purchase your own linens.

Kitchen
Your kitchen is stocked with all the basics. If you need something that is not provided, please see the company manager. Please remember that the next person will need the kitchen items just as much as you do, so please leave it for them in clean condition.

Garbage - You are responsible for emptying the trash and recycling in your own apartment. Trash is in the same space as the garage, to the right of the garage door. In Artech the dumpster is in the garage to the right of the garage door, the dumpster for the Dwight Way apartments outside the gate on Milvia Street, and the dumpster for Francisco Street is in the garage. Pickup days are posted at all locations.

Utilities - Berkeley Rep pays all of your utilities; please turn off your lights and appliances when they are not in use, and turn off the heater during winter months when you leave the apartment each morning. Thanks for helping keep our bills to a minimum!

Furniture - Please leave apartment furniture in its place upon your departure. Do NOT swap furniture with another fellow without permission from the company manager.

Keys - You are issued one set of keys. Please do not make copies. If you have a visitor to stay, please see the company manager to obtain an extra set of keys for your apartment. Please note that all visitors require your roommate(s)’ approval and are limited to no more than five visiting days.

Mail - ABSOLUTELY DO NOT change your permanent address to one the address listed below! You won't be able to change it later.  Please don’t use your apartments as your mailing addresses. There are a lot of reasons for this, but most importantly, it allows us to make sure that valuable documents get forwarded to you after your fellowship ends!

For School of Theatre, Electrics, Sound, and Stage Management:
Your name, 2025 Addison Street, Berkeley CA 94704
For Artistic, Development, Marketing, Production, Scenic Construction, Scenic Paint, Props, Costumes:

Company management and /or the School of Theatre will forward any mail that arrives after your departure. Please be sure we have your updated mailing address at your fellowship’s end.

Moving Out
Towards the end of your fellowship, Company Management will do a walk-through of your apartment with you to assess any damage and determine the need for further cleaning or repairs.  Please make sure you clean and fold all of your linens and towels.
